Michele Bachmann: If We Don’t Completely Support Israel, God Will Curse Us
At a Republican Jewish Coalition event in Los Angeles last week, Rep. Michele Bachmann offered a candid view of her positions on Israel: Support for Israel is handed down by God and if the United States pulls back its support, America will cease to exist.
Here’s a transcript of some of her remarks at the event:
“I am convinced in my heart and in my mind that if the United States fails to stand with Israel, that is the end of the United States . . . [W]e have to show that we are inextricably entwined, that as a nation we have been blessed because of our relationship with Israel, and if we reject Israel, then there is a curse that comes into play. And my husband and I are both Christians, and we believe very strongly the verse from Genesis [Genesis 12:3], we believe very strongly that nations also receive blessings as they bless Israel. It is a strong and beautiful principle.”
All this is well and good, but the reality is that the United States government and policy has plenty more to worry about where “God is concerned.” Without getting dark and foreboding, just use your imagination with some of the articles on this website for a little inspiration. You don’t need fire and brimstone to state the obvious kids.
As I boldly said on Newsvine MSNBC, Israel is as fine as any other world nation, but buying into the idea that “a Christian nation” must kiss their posterior is entirely insane. The US has plenty of other things going on “that are likely to buy God’s wrath” aside from Bachmann’s paranoia! The nation is already under the spell of its own self-fulfilling curse. Bachmann would do well to focus on those things that better the nation, things that secular people can begin to identify with if she plans on surviving the first round of the Republican political struggle.
